Role: Composer / Sound Designer

In Sparrow, I had the privilege of composing the score and designing the soundscape, shaping the auditory experience to mirror Damien's growing unease and the film's tense, surreal atmosphere. The narrative, filled with ambiguity and psychological tension, called for composition and sound design that could blur the lines between reality and Damien's warped perceptions. My role was to create an immersive environment that accentuated the film’s unsettling mood.

Drawing inspiration from films like The Lighthouse, I aimed to create a dark and minimalistic sound palette, using sparse instrumentation to highlight the isolation of Damien's world. The raw, atmospheric qualities of The Lighthouse influenced my approach to sound design, using environmental sounds and subtle sonic textures to enhance the sense of dread and the growing paranoia Damien feels about Sally.

Additionally, Cast Away served as another point of reference, particularly in how the relationship between Damien and Sally evolves. Much like the bond between Chuck and Wilson, I sought to evoke an emotional connection between Damien and his sparrow companion through the score, highlighting moments of tenderness that quickly shift into psychological horror. The contrast between calmness and tension was a crucial aspect of the score, where silence often spoke louder than sound itself.

The sound design was crafted to reflect Damien’s fragmented mind, with the film’s sonic elements frequently fading in and out, mirroring his inner turmoil. Each scene was approached with the intent to make the audience feel as though they, too, were slipping into Damien’s world—where the familiar feels strange and every sound could either offer comfort or forewarn danger.
